A criminal court in Damascus has sentenced former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia, after convicting him of premeditated murder, torture, arbitrary detention and crimes against humanity committed during Syria’s nearly 14-year civil war.
His brother Maher al-Assad and former security official Atef Najib were also handed death sentences.
The landmark verdict marks the first major domestic conviction against Bashar al-Assad and members of his inner circle since his government was overthrown in December 2024.
