🚨 🇰🇷 SOUTH KOREA’S CRYPTO TAX DEADLINE IS UNDER PRESSURE AGAIN!
💰 Could the 22% crypto tax be pushed back to 2029? 👀
South Korea’s long-running crypto tax debate is heating up once again. Millions of investors are watching closely as another possible delay enters the discussion.
📌 Here’s what you need to know:
🔹 The original plan: South Korea’s 22% crypto income tax was initially scheduled for January 2022. After three delays, the current target date is January 1, 2027.
🔹 A possible fourth delay: On October 16, lawmaker Park Min-gyu introduced a bill proposing to postpone the tax until 2029.
🔹 Major exchanges involved: On October 20, finance officials met representatives from five leading exchanges — Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Gopax, and Korbit — to discuss whether the 2027 rollout is realistic.
🔹 Who would be affected? The proposed tax applies to annual crypto gains exceeding 2.5 million Korean won, approximately $1,700.
🔹 The biggest obstacle: Crypto tax reporting infrastructure is still a concern, while South Korea has more than 13 million crypto investors to consider.
⚠️ Important: Another delay has been proposed, but it has NOT been officially enacted. Moving the deadline would require parliamentary approval.
🧠 My take: South Korea faces a difficult balancing act — bringing crypto taxation into effect while building a system that investors and exchanges can actually work with.
🔥 Here’s the big question:
If South Korea delays crypto taxes until 2029, could that encourage more retail investors to enter the market? Or would another delay simply create more uncertainty?
