Kraken is reportedly asking users to explain their Monero withdrawals, and X has been arguing about it all night.

According to screenshots and a Reddit report circulating on X, some Kraken users received due-diligence emails asking for their employment status, the source of funds behind USD and USDC deposits, and what they intend to do with the $XMR they withdrew, with a 7-day window to respond. Some say their accounts show "services limited" while they wait. Kraken frames this kind of request as routine AML review.

My take: this isn't really a Kraken story, it's a structural one. A fully KYC'd exchange that lists a privacy coin will always face this tension, because once XMR leaves the platform, nobody can follow it. So the scrutiny lands at the exit door instead. Expect more of this as regulators push exchanges harder, not less.

For traders, two practical points:
1. Privacy coins carry venue risk. Delistings, regional caps and withdrawal reviews can hit liquidity fast.
2. "Not your keys" also means "not your timeline". If an exchange freezes you for review, you wait.

$XMR is trading around $572 today, down about 4.8% in 24 hours per CoinGecko, so the market isn't treating this as bullish privacy demand yet.

Do you think exchange pressure pushes privacy coin users toward self-custody, or just away from the asset?
