Ethereum developers canceled the Oct 26 Hoodi testnet launch for the Glamsterdam upgrade. The delay follows a report from ChainSecurity identifying 13 real-world smart contracts at risk from proposed gas accounting changes. Researchers found that EIP-8037 and EIP-8038 could cause $ETH contracts to permanently record failed operations or fail during valid transactions.
The issue involves how gas is restored when operations are undone. Under the new rules, a contract might have enough gas to finish a failure-handling routine that would have previously reversed. Conversely, creating a new storage slot could cost 110,020 gas, up from 22,100 gas today. This could break legacy code with fixed gas budgets.
While the Sepolia testnet activation on Oct 6 was successful, the Hoodi delay leaves the early December mainnet goal uncertain. Developers are now investigating the impact on existing protocols before setting a new date.
