$OSMO : ZERO TOKEN INFLATION? A MAJOR GOVERNANCE DECISION IS APPROACHING

Osmosis is considering a significant restructuring of its token economics.

A governance proposal published on October 14 aims to stop new $OSMO issuance entirely, replacing inflation-funded staking rewards with revenue generated by the protocol.

The proposal targets an on-chain vote beginning October 20, 2026.

Under the current system, the mint module accounts for approximately 121,766 OSMO daily.

According to the proposal, this is distributed approximately as follows:

• 9,740 OSMO — Staking rewards

• 30,440 OSMO — Developer vesting

• 81,580 OSMO — Community pool

The community pool allocation does not immediately enter circulating supply.

If the proposal passes, new issuance through the mint module would stop, and daily developer vesting releases would pause.

Approximately 51.9 million previously minted OSMO would remain in the vesting module, requiring a separate governance decision for future release.

Staking rewards would then depend on transaction fees and protocol-generated revenue.

This creates an important economic question.

Can real network revenue sustainably compensate validators without inflationary subsidies?

Lower issuance is measurable, but its implications for security, staking participation, and token demand require observation.

Proposal: confirmed.

Zero-inflation implementation: not yet approved.

Sustainable revenue-funded staking: still needs to be demonstrated.
