South Korea's National Tax Service says it is preparing detailed crypto tax standards for next month. This came out of a parliamentary audit on 13 Oct 2026 (Bytes Europe, 14 Oct; Yonhap via CoinGabbar, 14 Oct).

What is confirmed so far:
- Effective date: 1 Jan 2027, after being delayed three times
- Rate: 20% national tax plus local tax, so 22% combined
- Basic deduction: 2.5 million won per year, with gains and losses netted annually
- First returns cover 2027 and are due in May 2028
- It covers income from transferring or lending digital assets, including on overseas exchanges and private wallets when they generate qualifying income

What is still open:
- Treatment of staking, airdrops, hard forks and DeFi is not settled
- Tracking transfers between private wallets is hard, and tax authorities admit data collection is a challenge
- No exact date for the November guidance has been set, and it may not answer every question

Why it matters: South Korea is one of the most active crypto markets in the world, so tax clarity can change how traders use exchanges, wallets and $BTC and $ETH . Rules may still change, so check official notices before making decisions.

This is not tax or financial advice. Tax rules depend on your own situation, so consult a qualified professional.

My take: clear tax rules are not bullish or bearish by themselves. The real impact will come from how staking and DeFi are treated in November.

Do you think a 22% tax will push traders to other markets, or is clarity better than uncertainty? 👇
