Cardano (@Cardano) founder Charles Hoskinson (@IOHK_Charles) used TOKEN2049 Singapore on October 7 to put Midnight (@MidnightNtwrk) and its privacy-focused technology firmly in the spotlight, while taking a pointed shot at the Cardano Foundation over the project's absence from the ecosystem's main booth at the event.

Midnight Left Out of Cardano's Booth

Hoskinson was visibly critical after finding no mention of Midnight at the Cardano Foundation's showcase. He questioned why the project was excluded from the 108-square-meter stand, which featured more than 30 Cardano projects. Projects including Minswap, Iagon, SNEK and GravityDEX all had a presence at the display. "The largest project on Cardano doesn't seem to be listed anywhere in the ecosystem," Hoskinson said in a video shared on social media. He quipped that Midnight's absence was perhaps fitting, given its focus on privacy. Hoskinson also noted the booth was funded by the Cardano community and urged members to monitor how treasury funds are used.

Midnight had its own separate presence at TOKEN2049, and the episode added to ongoing disagreements between Hoskinson and the Cardano Foundation over ecosystem representation.

The Night Frame and Midnight's Technical Push

On the TOKEN2049 stage, Hoskinson promoted what he calls the Night Frame, a framework that pairs zero-knowledge proofs, multi-party computation and trusted execution environments on Midnight, the privacy-focused partner chain built by Input Output Global (IOG). The combination is designed to bring meaningful privacy and computational complexity to on-chain operations, going beyond what conventional smart contracts can offer.

Midnight also ran its own keynote at TOKEN2049, where the team showcased several products, including Night Mode, Midnight Passport, the Collateral Warehouse and Offer Files. Night Mode uses the same trio of zero-knowledge proofs, trusted execution environments and multi-party computation, and is designed to support programmable smart contracts with selective disclosure, written in Midnight's Compact programming language.

The event followed a significant technical milestone for the network. On October 2, 2026, permissionless smart contract deployment went live on the Midnight mainnet, allowing developers to freely deploy contracts or create them through code. Developers can now deploy contracts directly to Midnight mainnet without first going through a mandatory security review, and applications can also deploy contracts on behalf of users, removing another hurdle from the onboarding process.

Midnight's Solana wallet integration could also extend its privacy tools beyond the Cardano ecosystem, widening the potential addressable market for the $NIGHT token. The network runs on two tokens: NIGHT, which handles governance and utility and has a fixed supply of 24 billion, and DUST, a shielded token that serves as a renewable resource for paying transaction fees.
