TRUMP IS USING TARIFFS TO BRING SEMICONDUCTOR PRODUCTION BACK TO AMERICA

US is considering to extend tariffs beyond chips that are imported to laptops, gaming consoles and data centre servers containing them.

Foreign companies could receive tariff relief if they invest in American chip factories, turning exemptions into an incentive to move production to the US.

America once controlled 37% of global chip-manufacturing capacity, but its share had fallen below 10% by 2024.

US had already imposed a 25% tariff on a narrow group of imported advanced chips in January.

TSMC has increased its US investment for chip production to $265 billion.

While Washington aims to bring 40% of Taiwan’s chip supply chain and production to America.

But factories take years to build. Until they are ready, broader tariffs could make electronics and AI infrastructure more expensive.

The proposal remains under consideration and could still change before being formally announced.
