The unbelievable has happened. The venerable American administration, a bastion of financial traditions, has taken a giant step towards the future. The Department of Commerce announced this week that it will release six indicators for the macroeconomy, including real GDP, the personal consumption expenditures price index, and real final sales to private domestic purchasers.

Macroeconomics meets blockchain technology

This initiative, launched by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, is not just an experiment; it is the result of a partnership with key players in the ecosystem, including oracle protocols:

Chainlink, which provides the six indicators through its data feeds, powered by ten blockchain networks, including Ethereum, Avalanche, and Optimism, as well as networks like Base, Linia, Mantle, Botanic, Sonic, and ZK Sync.

The Python network, which initially publishes quarterly GDP data over the past five years, aims to expand its economic data in the near future.

At the same time, a press release from the Department of Commerce, circulated by various media outlets, indicated that data will be distributed across Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Tron, Stellar, Avalanche, Arbitrum, Polygon, and Optimism networks.

Some trading platforms, including Coinbase, Gemini, and Kraken, facilitate access to this data, for example, by making it available directly through their interface or API.

A primarily political process?

Of course, it is impossible not to see a political dimension to this initiative. Howard Lutnick was quick to point out that this initiative aligns with the administration of Donald Trump, "the crypto president."

Lutnick did not hesitate yesterday:

"The Department of Commerce will begin publishing its statistics related to blockchains, as you are the cryptocurrency president, and we will put our GDP on the blockchain so that people can use and distribute it in data."

The message is clear: the United States wants to cement its position as the "cryptocurrency capital of the world" and to announce it publicly. There is a degree of pragmatism and vision, but also a desire to capitalize on the cryptocurrency frenzy.
