"Made in USA" seal or 25% customs duty U.S. President Donald Trump threatens Apple with a 25% customs duty if it does not produce in the country and is sinking its shares on Wall Street
🌐 Donald Trump's trade war became an economic focal point again on Friday, May 23, with a direct threat to Silicon Valley's flagship company, Apple.
The U.S. President issued an ultimatum via the social media platform Truth Social: if iPhones are not produced on U.S. soil, the company will have to accept a 25% customs duty.
The warning had an immediate impact on the markets: Apple shares fell by more than 3% in pre-market trading, while the S&P 500 dropped by 1.23%.
🚨 The threat comes despite Apple’s president moving to calm the situation. Shortly after Trump returned to power, the company announced in February that it would invest $500 billion over the next four years.
A new factory is planned to be established in Houston, creating 20,000 jobs. But it seems that this has not been enough. The threat to Apple may only be the tip of the iceberg. Trump announced that other tech brands, like South Korea's Samsung, would also face a 25% customs duty if they do not move their factories to the U.S.
The President, who said, "If you want to sell in the U.S., I want you to produce here," assured that the measures could come into effect by the end of June.
"Going to India is not an issue, but they will not sell here without customs duties. That's the situation," the president said in his statement in the Oval Office. And although some measures have been temporarily suspended in the past, this new trade attack appears to have a more demanding and permanent tone.
