During the Hong Kong Blockchain Week, I participated in the Web3 Gaming Summer event organized by the DAO organization @GMA_DAO, which has long focused on web3 games. I hosted a significant roundtable forum, and it was quite rewarding. Many people attended, exceeding expectations, and there are so many people interested in web3 games. Although we are currently in a downturn, in the long run, we all hope that web3 games will be an important application for mass adoption in the web3 field.

1. There is a growing belief that the web3 gaming track is dead. The performance of several games that were previously given high expectations after launching tokens has been disappointing. What do you think?

@VincentSkywalke: It feels like the current public chains or layer2s have gone in the wrong direction. They haven't found the best game developers, and many public chain teams have also laid flat. The reason why existing web3 games are not monetizing well is largely because the games themselves are not fun enough, and the promotion is just internal cannibalization among web3 users. The best game developers are in mainland China; we need to find them, invest in them, and allow the games themselves to generate positive income to have a chance. I call on Chinese web3 game developers to unite and create a public chain together.

@longwinsk: I am optimistic about the long-term development of the web3 application layer. We believe that the web3 field is still in 1999 of the internet era, very early, and the user base is also very small. It’s normal that web3 games are not monetizing well now. As regulations in various countries become clearer and the user base increases, more game developers and players will see the advantages of web3 and come to develop games. If web3 only consists of Bitcoin and DeFi, it should be called crypto finance. Public chains like Ethereum represent the future of web3.

@pcfli: GMA has been deeply involved in the web3 gaming field, and the overall situation is indeed not very good. I prefer to think it is still due to the small user base, coupled with market factors. Only when more web2 traditional players enter will there be a possibility of mass adoption in the web3 field. We also need more robust infrastructure, such as public chains and payment systems, for the application layer to potentially explode.
