Ethereum development team has achieved a significant breakthrough: the Holesky testnet successfully reached finality on March 10, 2025 (UTC) after nearly two weeks of technical interruptions. This progress has cleared some obstacles for the highly anticipated Pectra upgrade and has gradually unveiled the timeline for the Ethereum mainnet upgrade.

Chronicle of Interruptions: From Fork to Recovery

The Holesky testnet, as the first important testing ground for the Pectra upgrade, launched testing on February 24. However, shortly after the upgrade went live, a bug in the Execution Layer (EL) triggered a chain forking crisis, causing many validators to certify an invalid chain, which led to the network's inability to reach final confirmation, and transaction processing nearly came to a standstill. Ethereum core developer Tim Beiko pointed out that this incident exposed weaknesses in the multi-client architecture under stress testing.

In response to this challenge, the development team quickly took action by implementing a large-scale slashing strategy to eliminate problematic nodes and requiring validators to resynchronize to the correct chain. Meanwhile, the shadow fork launched on March 6 provided an isolated testing environment for the recovery work. After continuous efforts, the Holesky testnet finally restored finality on March 10 at 19:21:36 (UTC), completing the confirmation of epoch 119090, with the block root being 0xe399345862c4134de023e10426707b6ddaf4f15f0057cb226ab0db1ec481c82f.

And we've finalized. Thank you community!

Pectra Upgrade: Prospects and Challenges

The Pectra upgrade is another technical leap for Ethereum following the Dencun upgrade in 2024, covering multiple Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs). Among them, EIP-7702 aims to optimize account abstraction and enhance wallet user experience, while EIP-7251 significantly raises the validator staking limit from 32 ETH to 2048 ETH, aiming to lower the participation threshold and enhance network security. The upgrade was originally scheduled for deployment on the mainnet in April 2025, but setbacks during the testing phase have forced developers to reassess the timeline.

Previously, the Sepolia testnet also encountered an empty block issue during the Pectra test on March 5 due to a misconfiguration of the deposit contract. Although it was fixed the same day, the long-term stability of Holesky remains a focal point. Ethereum Foundation researcher Alex Stokes stated that the early recovery of Holesky has bought valuable time for the team, and subsequent data will determine the final date for the mainnet launch.

Future Plans: Shadow Fork and Mainnet Deployment

Developers revealed that the next step will launch a new round of Holesky shadow forks in the week of March 17 to support ecosystem testing of Pectra features while ensuring the stability of the main testnet, laying the foundation for the future Fusaka upgrade. The Ethereum 'All Core Developers' (ACD) meeting is expected to be held at the end of March, at which time the mainnet upgrade timeline will be finalized based on testing results, with industry predictions widely suggesting a potential delay until early Q2 2025.

Market and community response

The successful recovery of the Holesky testnet has sparked heated discussions within the Ethereum community. Blockchain analyst James Liu stated, "While the issues with the testnet are concerning, they ultimately proved to be configuration rather than protocol-level flaws, which is crucial for confidence in Pectra." In the market, Ethereum's price slightly rose following the announcement, reflecting investors' optimistic attitude towards the upgrade prospects.

The restart of the Holesky testnet marks the entry of the Pectra upgrade testing into a new phase. As the second largest blockchain network by market capitalization, every upgrade of Ethereum affects the industry significantly. With technical challenges gradually resolved, Pectra is expected to bring stronger performance and flexibility to Ethereum, and its subsequent developments are worth close attention.
