On January 20, 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order establishing the U.S. DOGE Service Temporary Organization, creating the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
DOGE officially reached the end of its legal mandate on July 4, 2026.
DOGE was created as an 18-month initiative to reduce federal spending, eliminate waste, modernize government technology, cancel unnecessary contracts, shrink the federal workforce and improve efficiency across agencies.
Led by Elon Musk during its early months, DOGE claimed to have saved $215 BILLION through cancelled contracts, grants, leases, workforce reductions and other cost-cutting measures.
DOGE estimated the figure equated to roughly $1,335 per U.S. taxpayer.
DOGE's savings tracker stopped updating after January 1, 2026, with the administration saying its impact will be reflected through agency actions, appropriations and rescission packages rather than a standalone report.
