What Is Bitlayer?

Bitlayer is a Layer-2 protocol built atop the Bitcoin blockchain, designed to bring Turing-complete smart contracts and scalable decentralized applications (dApps) to the Bitcoin ecosystem. Core Architecture & Mechanisms

BitVM-based hybrid proofs: Bitlayer uses a combination of ZK validity proofs and fraud-proof challenge mechanisms. State transitions are accepted off-chain unless challenged during a designated time window—making settlement both efficient and secure.

Dual finality model:

Soft finality: Sub-second confirmation within Bitlayer’s PoS consensus layer.

Hard finality: Ultimate settlement anchored on Bitcoin’s L1 within ~7 days via rollup proofs.

Execution Engine & Consensus:

PoS-based validators sequence and produce L2 blocks.

Rollup Operators—rotated periodically and backed by BTC collateral—bundle states and submit them for Bitcoin settlement. Full nodes verify independently.

Asset bridge: Bitlayer employs a trust-minimized BitVM bridge, possibly leveraging Discreet Log Contracts (DLCs), to securely link BTC and other assets across chains.
