9 July – St. Augustine Zhao Rong and Companions
Martyrs of China

St. Augustine Zhao Rong was a Chinese soldier who converted to Catholicism while guarding foreign missionaries. He was ordained a priest and, along with many other Chinese Catholics and foreign missionaries, suffered persecution during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. They were tortured and killed for their faith in various parts of China. A total of 120 martyrs (87 Chinese and 33 foreign) from this period and earlier persecutions were canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2000.

These heroic Chinese and foreign Christians who gave their lives for Christ in the “Century of Martyrs” — reminding us that the faith knows no borders and that the blood of martyrs continues to be the seed of the Church.

Bishop, Martyr & Apostle of Franconia

Born in Ireland around 640, Kilian, along with companions Colman and Totnan, left for the continent as a missionary. They evangelized in what is now Germany, particularly in Würzburg, where he converted the local duke and many people. Kilian boldly rebuked the duke for his unlawful marriage, leading to his martyrdom by beheading around 689 along with his companions. His shrine in Würzburg became a major pilgrimage site, and he is venerated as the Apostle of Franconia.

An Irish missionary who brought the faith to pagan Germany — showing the power of bold preaching and the ultimate witness of martyrdom for Christ.

Bishop & Confessor

Born around 500 AD in Aquitaine, Felix became Bishop of Nantes in 549. He was known for his holiness, learning, and zealous pastoral care during a time of barbarian invasions and moral decay. He rebuilt churches, promoted clerical discipline, cared for the poor, and worked for peace in the region. His correspondence with St. Gregory of Tours highlights his wisdom and charity. He died on 6 July 583 (feast observed on 7 July).

A holy bishop who guided his flock through turbulent times — showing that faithful leadership, charity, and reform can bring stability and holiness to a troubled diocese.

Virgin & Martyr

Born on 16 October 1890 in Corinaldo, Italy, to a poor farming family, Maria was known for her piety, obedience, and cheerfulness. At age 11, she was brutally assaulted by a neighbor who demanded she sin with him. She resisted, declaring it a sin, and was stabbed multiple times. Before dying the next day on 6 July 1902, she forgave her attacker and received Holy Communion. Canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1950 in the presence of her mother and attacker (who had converted). She is the patron of purity, youth, and victims of abuse.

A young girl who chose purity and forgiveness even at the cost of her life — showing the heroic power of chastity and Christian mercy in the face of evil.

Priest, Founder of the Barnabites & Confessor

Born in 1502 in Cremona, Italy, into a noble family. He studied medicine but felt called to the priesthood, ordained in 1528. Deeply moved by the moral decay of his time, he founded the Clerics Regular of St. Paul (Barnabites) in 1530 with two companions, aiming for a reform of clergy and laity through strict observance, preaching, and works of charity. He promoted frequent Communion, the Forty Hours devotion, and the reform of religious life. Known for his austere life, powerful preaching, and miracles of healing. He died on 5 July 1539 at age 37. Canonized in 1897 by Pope Leo XIII. Patron of physicians and the Barnabite Order.

Queen, Widow & Peacemaker

Born Isabel of Aragon in 1271, daughter of King Peter III of Aragon. Married at age 12 to King Denis of Portugal, she became a model queen — deeply devout, charitable, and a peacemaker. She founded hospitals, monasteries, and homes for the poor, often personally caring for the sick and distributing alms. When her husband’s jealousy led to family conflict and civil war threatened between her sons, she rode between the opposing armies and successfully reconciled them. After King Denis’s death in 1325, she retired to a Poor Clare monastery she had founded, living in great simplicity while continuing her works of mercy. Died on 4 July 1336. Canonized in 1625 by Pope Urban VIII. Patroness of Portugal, peacemakers, and victims of jealousy.

3 July – St. Thomas the Apostle
(Feast)

One of the Twelve Apostles, often called “Doubting Thomas” for his initial refusal to believe the Resurrection until he could see and touch the wounds of the Risen Christ. Jesus appeared to him eight days later and invited him to do exactly that, prompting Thomas’s profound confession: “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28). Tradition holds that he preached the Gospel in Parthia and India, founding the ancient St. Thomas Christian communities in Kerala. He was martyred by spearing in Mylapore (near modern Chennai), India, around 72 AD. Patron of architects, builders, and India; invoked against doubt.

The apostle whose honest doubt led to one of the clearest confessions of Christ’s divinity — reminding us that sincere questions, when brought to the Lord, can become the foundation of unshakeable faith.

Lord Jesus, through the intercession of St. Thomas the Apostle, strengthen our faith when we doubt, grant us the grace to confess You boldly as Lord and God, and lead many souls to You through missionary zeal.
