📊 The diagnosis that VenAmCham puts on the table

UAcosta was clart to point out that the health of the national productive apparatus is not at its best. Informality, the black market, the transactional employment of little value, and a deteriorated real salary are part of the landscape. For there to be a genuine increase in employment, according to his view, three conditions must occur simultaneously: that investment is reactivated, that the technology available improves, and that workers are trained.

It is a reasonable approach, but incomplete when looking at it from the street. In a country where a large part of the economically active population does not depend on formal payroll, employment is created today in small retail, in informal services, and in the digital economy. And that’s where digital dollars play a role that no business chamber report usually measures.

📈 GDP per capita: the gap that explains everything

The union leader compared figures that hurt: Venezuela’s Gross Domestic Product per capita is around US$4,200 per year, while Chile’s is close to US$16,000. The difference of nearly four times is not just a statistical datum: it translates into wages that don’t cover needs, into workers looking for additional income, and into families that diversify their sources of money to make ends meet.

That gap is precisely the breeding ground for the Venezuelan crypto ecosystem. When formal income doesn’t cover the basket, people look for alternative mechanisms to protect value. And in Venezuela that mechanism has a name and last name: USDT.

🔎 USDT as a parallel salary

Just look at how the P2P market moves across the main platforms to understand the dynamics. There are merchants who set prices in digital dollars, freelancers who get paid in stablecoins, remittances that arrive converted into crypto, and a huge mass of users who use USDT as a de facto savings account in the face of the bolívar’s volatility.

The P2P exchange rate has become a faster reference than any official rate to know what a Venezuelan’s work is really worth. When P2P rises strongly, it’s not only that the dollar is getting more expensive: the purchasing power of those who receive bolívares is being eroded. And that directly affects the labor market that VenAmCham is talking about.

💰 Digital banking, that bridge half built

Venezuelan banking has advanced in digitalization: mobile apps, instant payments, frictionless transfers. But this progress clashes with an uncomfortable reality: a large part of the economy operates outside the traditional financial system. For many users, digital banking handles day-to-day needs in bolívares, while USDT handles the preservation of value.

This coexistence is not a technological whim. It’s the rational response to an environment where the local currency loses value and where access to physical foreign exchange remains limited. Digital banking gains ground as a payment infrastructure, but loses the savings battle to stablecoins.
