If you’ve ever opened the Binance "Spot" trading interface and felt overwhelmed by the flashing red and green numbers, you aren’t alone. That section is called the Order Book, and it is one of the most powerful tools available to a trader.
In this guide, we’ll break down what the order book is, how to read it, and how to use it to make smarter trades.
1. What is an Order Book?
Think of the order book as a live marketplace. It is a real-time list of all the people waiting to buy or sell a specific cryptocurrency (like Bitcoin).
It is divided into two sides:
The Red Side (Asks): These are the Sellers. They are "asking" for a certain price to let go of their coins. The lowest price is at the bottom of the red list. The Green Side (Bids): These are the Buyers. They are "bidding" a certain price to acquire coins. The highest price is at the top of the green list.
2. Anatomy of an Order
Every line you see in the order book contains three critical pieces of information:
Price: What the buyer/seller is willing to pay.Amount: How many coins (e.g., BTC) are available at that price.Total: The total value of that order in the quote currency (e.g., USDT).
3. The "Spread" and the "Market Price"
In the middle of the red and green sections, you will see a large number. This is the Last Traded Price.
The tiny gap between the highest green number (Buy) and the lowest red number (Sell) is called the Spread. In a healthy, "liquid" market, this gap is very small—often just a few cents.
4. Spotting "Buy" and "Sell" Walls
Have you ever noticed a massive number in the "Amount" column that doesn't seem to move? This is known as a Wall.
Buy Wall: A massive amount of buy orders at a specific price. This often acts as "Support," preventing the price from falling lower because there is so much demand there.Sell Wall: A massive amount of sell orders. This acts as "Resistance," making it hard for the price to move higher until all those coins are bought.
5. Why Does it Matter to You?
The order book helps you answer two vital questions:
Is there Liquidity? If the book is "thick" (lots of orders), you can buy or sell quickly without changing the price much.Where is the market going? If you see the buy side growing much larger than the sell side, it might indicate that a price move upward is coming.
