General Motors CEO Mary Barra said on Monday that the company is still on track to launch its hands-free driving technology by 2028. According to Sina Finance, General Motors announced last October that it planned to debut its next-generation driver-assistance system in 2028 on the Cadillac Escalade IQ electric vehicle before rolling it out to other models.

Barra said in an interview that she recently tried the technology herself and was impressed by how much it has improved since her last ride in March. She said the team is making significant progress toward its goal of reaching “eyes-off, hands-off” driving around 2028.

General Motors entered personal autonomous driving after deciding in December 2024 to abandon its Cruise robotaxi business, which had received more than $10 billion in investment. Barra said the company is not pursuing taxi or bus businesses and has kept most of the Cruise team to work on personal autonomous driving technology.

She also rejected the view that widespread autonomous vehicles would eventually reduce demand for private cars, saying people still value the convenience of having a car parked in their driveway.
