๐ฅ New cryptocurrency ETF regulations in Thailand
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Thailand has approved a regulatory framework allowing local asset management companies to launch cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds (ETFs) on the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET).
At launch, only ETFs based on the two leading cryptocurrencies are permitted - Bitcoin and Ethereum. Under the regulator's rules, a fund must track a single underlying asset, with the cryptocurrency accounting for at least 80% of the fund's Net Asset Value (NAV).
While opening a legal domestic market, the regulator is curbing capital outflows. Retail investors will be barred from products offering indirect exposure to foreign crypto ETFs.
Strict trading rules are being introduced. Brokers are strictly prohibited from providing leverage to clients for purchasing crypto ETFs. Additionally, investors must complete a formal risk acknowledgment procedure before placing their first trade.
Thailand is a global leader in digital asset adoption, with roughly 20% of its population owning cryptocurrencyโa rate exceeding that of the United States. The launch of fully regulated local funds establishes a safe and transparent bridge for migrating traditional capital into digital assets within Southeast Asia's legal framework.
