Sui is trying to break its own TPS record live on stage at Basecamp in Singapore today. The bar: 6,086,766 transactions per second, set on July 4. CertiK is the independent verifier, and there's a 16,000 $SUI prediction pool for guessing the final number.
Here's the part the stage won't show you.
The July record ran through "programmable tunnels": off-chain channels where AI agents traded with each other, then settled to Sui's L1 in batches. The 6M figure counts activity inside those tunnels, not transactions individually confirmed on the public chain in real time.
Actual mainnet usage looks very different. Sui's 7-day average in September was about 80 TPS. Independent analyses put real-world mainnet peaks closer to 1,000 TPS.
So a new record today tells you the tunnel design can scale under controlled load. It doesn't tell you there's demand to fill even a fraction of it.
Meanwhile the token is running into the event: SUI was trading around $1.17 on Oct 2 after its Oct 1 unlock, then jumped on a teaser for an unnamed finance product.
The fair bull case: capacity has to be built before demand shows up, and agent-to-agent payments are exactly the workload that needs off-chain channels. If the finance product brings real users, the headroom matters.
Is a TPS record a product milestone, or a marketing event with a scoreboard?
Personal commentary, not financial advice. DYOR.
