went back through the announcements in date order this week and noticed something I'd missed by reading them individually.
june 2025, Dusk announced an evolution to a multilayer architecture. six days later, Hedger.
those two are the same decision.
heres what changed. Dusk started as a single layer. one chain, one execution environment, privacy built into the base. the modular version splits it, DuskDS carries consensus finality and settlement, DuskVM runs Rust contracts on the L1, DuskEVM sits above as the EVM execution layer
and the moment you add an EVM layer you need a privacy engine that works on an account model, becuse Zedger was built for UTXO layers and doesnt transfer. so Hedger isnt a separate product launch. its the thing the restructure REQUIRED
what I find interesting is what that says about priorities. the original design had stronger privacy and almost no developers. the modular design accepts weaker anonymity on the EVM side in exchange for standard tooling, and keeps the stronger model available on DuskVM for anyone who needs it
so its not a pivot. its an admission that the strongest cryptography is worthless if the regulated institutions you built it for cant hire anyone to write against it
the sceptical read, and I'll say it, is that modular architecture is also just what everyone did in 2025. every monolithic chain discovered modularity around the same time and its hard to separate genuine architectural reasoning from following the sector
whats your take, was splitting into layers a technical decision or a distribution one
