This is no longer just an exchange security incident. It's becoming a major test of how the entire crypto industry responds to state-linked cybercrime.
The FBI has officially attributed the massive Binance attack to North Korea's TraderTraitor hacking group — and now the pressure is on exchanges, DeFi platforms and blockchain infrastructure providers.
Here's what you need to know. 👇
🔴 1. FBI OFFICIALLY NAMES THE HACKERS
The FBI says TraderTraitor was responsible for stealing more than $6.3 billion in crypto assets from Binance around October 29, 2026.
Investigators observed the stolen assets being converted primarily into Ethereum ($ETH).
Authorities expect further laundering through DeFi platforms and instant-swap services.
🛑 2. THE FBI WANTS THE INDUSTRY TO ACT
The FBI, U.S. Secret Service and IRS Criminal Investigation are urging:
THORNode operatorsRPC node operatorsInstant exchangesDeFi platformsBlockchain analytics companiesOther virtual asset service providers
to block transactions involving wallet addresses identified in the FBI alert.
This is a significant moment for decentralized finance: the industry is being asked to help stop the movement of stolen funds while preserving its decentralized principles.
🛡️ 3. BINANCE RECOVERY NOW REACHES 95%
Binance's latest November 1 update reports approximately 95% of the affected amount has been covered, up from 90% in the previous update.
The exchange says:
More than $6.34 billion was set aside to cover the financial impact.Funding includes corporate resources, SAFU and the Futures Insurance Fund.Ten major assets, including BTC, ETH, USDT, BNB, SOL, USDC, XRP, USD1, RLUSD and ZEC, are reported as 100% backed. The remaining 5% consists of less-liquid tokens that take longer to source.
Binance says users will not bear the financial losses.
🚀 4. WITHDRAWALS ARE RETURNING IN PHASES
Binance scheduled the first phase of withdrawals for November 1, between 06:00 and 09:00 UTC.
The rollout is progressive, so users should check the withdrawal page for their specific asset and network before making a transaction.
📊 MY TAKE: CRYPTO SECURITY IS EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY
The biggest lesson from this incident is that protecting crypto assets cannot depend on exchanges alone.
Wallet providers, DeFi protocols, node operators, exchanges and regulators all have important roles in preventing stolen funds from moving through the ecosystem.
Binance's 95% recovery is a major milestone, but the remaining work is not finished. The industry still needs stronger security, faster threat detection and transparent cooperation.
🔥 THE BIG QUESTION:
If hackers can steal billions from a major exchange, are other crypto platforms prepared for an attack of this scale?
And should decentralized platforms be expected to block wallets identified by law enforcement?
