Cardano is now supported in the x402 payment standard, enabling websites and APIs to request automated on-chain payments from software and AI agents.
With x402, an agent can request a paid API or data service, receive a 402 Payment Required response, sign the required transaction, and access the service after payment verification. Cardano supports ADA and native assets, including stablecoins.
The Cardano Foundation’s x402 facilitator has also completed a real on-chain payment test on Preprod. Mainnet testing has not yet been completed, so commercial adoption remains the key milestone to watch.
The bigger opportunity is simple: AI agents could pay for data, APIs and computing automatically—without a traditional checkout for every transaction.
