I Keep Coming Back to Dusk’s Depth-34 Bet

I’ve been digging deeper into Dusk’s Phoenix note tree, and the depth-34 choice keeps standing out to me for a reason that goes beyond the headline number. At roughly 17.2 billion possible leaves, it gives Dusk a huge amount of theoretical room, especially when I compare it with depth 32 at around 4.3 billion and depth 36 at more than 68 billion. What fascinates me is how asymmetric that growth is. A small increase in depth creates an enormous jump in capacity, while the proof path only gets one step longer. I see that as a surprisingly efficient tradeoff for a privacy-focused system.

But I don’t think the real story is the number of leaves. I think the harder question starts when real activity begins filling that space. Notes keep accumulating, proofs still need paths to recent roots, and the network has to deal with witnesses, storage, state access, and the practical cost of maintaining that growing history. I see depth 34 less as a destination and more as a strategic runway. It gives Dusk serious room to grow, but the real test is whether that architecture continues to feel efficient when private transactions become sustained, heavy, and genuinely massive in scale.
