From my understanding, those pre-defined spending paths allow different outcomes depending on cryptographic proofs instead of trusting a custodian. The lending example made this easier to picture: Bob locks 1 BTC to borrow $50,000. If Bitcoin drops below $50,000, Larry can liquidate the collateral. Otherwise, once Bob repays the loan, he regains access to his BTC. Reading that helped me understand why the docs say trust assumptions can be reduced.
The next section on Proof Verification via BitVM3 was more challenging. It discusses using zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) for arbitrary off-chain state proofs rather than relying on earlier approaches like HTLCs or EOTS. I think I understand the motivation, but I'm still unsure about the practical trade-offs.
How expensive is proof generation in practice? If verification logic evolves, who governs those upgrades? Could increasing cryptographic complexity create new security or decentralization challenges that aren't immediately obvious?
