The collapse of Silvergate Bank, a cryptocurrency-friendly bank, was the result of an overreliance on crypto deposits and "ineffective" senior management, according to Federal Reserve examiners.
Silvergate Bank transformed from a community lender to a high-flying crypto bank without Federal Reserve examiners raising alarm bells. This allowed the bank to take risks that would prove fatal.
The investigation revealed that Silvergate's change in strategy to focus on "crypto-involved customers" in 2023 led to the bank's voluntary liquidation. During this period of rapid growth, the bank essentially became a single-industry lender, with the vast majority of its customers' deposits uninsured and interest-free.
In addition, nepotism was found to plague the bank's senior management, leading to an incompetent and ineffective corporate structure that failed to address the many risks present at the time. Silvergate's overreliance on cryptocurrencies became apparent following the collapse of the now-defunct crypto exchange FTX in November 2022, with tens of billions of dollars in capital fleeing the sector in the following months.
The bank voluntarily liquidated in March 2023, meaning the bank did not technically fail.
