Joseph Lubin, co-founder of Ethereum and CEO of Consensys, believes Ethereum is moving toward a major upgrade: becoming a fully zero-knowledge (ZK) proof-based system within the next 3 to 5 years.
In simple terms, ZK technology helps verify transactions faster and more securely without exposing unnecessary data.
What’s happening with Ethereum?
$ETH has been trying to scale using Layer 2 networks (called “rollups”). These are separate chains that handle transactions faster while still relying on Ethereum for security.
This approach was sometimes criticized because it splits users and liquidity across many networks.
Even Ethereum’s co-founder Vitalik Buterin pointed out that the ecosystem became too fragmented.
Lubin’s view: this is part of the plan
According to Lubin, this “fragmentation phase” was actually expected.
Layer 2 networks were meant to:
* experiment with new technology
* test scaling solutions
* push innovations like ZK proofs
Now, those experiments are starting to pay off.
The big idea: a ZK-powered Ethereum
Lubin says Ethereum could evolve into a fully ZK-based protocol in 3–5 years.
If that happens, it could lead to:
* faster transactions
* better connection between Layer 2s
* easier movement of assets (no complicated bridges)
* more unified liquidity across the ecosystem
What Layer 2s are doing now
Some Layer 2 networks are already using advanced ZK systems to prove transactions almost in real time.
Examples include:
* Linea (built by Consensys)
* Gnosis ecosystem tools
* enterprise Ethereum systems like Besu
The bigger shift
Ethereum is moving from a “scattered ecosystem” into a more connected one.
First came experimentation and fragmentation.
Now the direction is convergence — bringing everything closer together again.
