Tuesday does not reprice the CPI. It reprices the gap inside it.
The last print ran a 3.7% headline against 2.6% core. That 110bp gap is 30% of the number, and it was energy: WTI fell 13.2% last week to $90.34 a barrel. Hike odds still sit near 76%, so the bet now rests on core alone, where consensus is 0.2% month over month against 0.3% prior.
The market walks into that test on a thin book. $HYPE lost 10.8% this week on 49% of its normal dollar flow, and $BTC ran at 37% of its weekly pace. Only $ZEC held near-normal flow.
Three clocks: Tuesday's release resets rate pricing, Thursday's claims and chip earnings reset breadth, Friday's PPI says whether core is pipeline or pass-through.
I am not forecasting direction, only sizing the move. I flip if core prints 0.2% or lower and dollar flow returns to the weekly average.
Data as of today. Not financial advice.
Does a soft core kill the December hike, or does the Fed need the headline to fall too?
