$SOL - What Is the Solana Alpenglow Upgrade?
Solana just had its BIGGEST upgrade since 2020.
It's called Alpenglow. It went live on Oct 21, 2026.
What did it change?
Before Alpenglow:
Finality = 12.8 seconds
Validators voted by sending transactions on-chain
After Alpenglow:
Finality = ~150 milliseconds - 99% faster!
Faster than a blink.
How?
It replaced the old system TowerBFT with a new system called Votor.
Now validators vote directly to each other, not as on-chain transactions. A block becomes final in just 1-2 rounds.
If 80% stake agrees = Final in 1 round
If 60% stake agrees = Final in 2 rounds
Why it matters for YOU:
Faster DeFi, trading & payments
More block space for real users - 75% of old transactions were just votes
Cheaper for validators - 1.1 SOL/day fees replaced by flat 0.8 SOL per epoch
Stronger - Can handle 20% bad + 20% offline validators
What did NOT change?
Your wallet, fees, and apps stay the same. You don't need to do anything.
