🇺🇸 Trump says he has “every intention” of keeping Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth—but acknowledges that replacing him would be easier before Democrats take control of the Senate next year.

Speaking to ABC News, Trump said he had received calls from people concerned about Hegseth, though he did not “understand why.” His public support follows reports that he was considering a change at the Pentagon after the midterms.

There is also a possible Senate exit route. Trump said Hegseth would be “very popular” as a replacement for Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn, who is running for governor. The Hill reported that Hegseth had shown interest in the seat; the Pentagon dismissed those reports as “beltway gossip.”

The key issue is timing. Republicans currently hold a 53–47 Senate majority, giving Trump room to lose three GOP votes on a nominee with the vice president breaking a tie. Democrats have reportedly secured at least 54 seats in the next Senate, making any replacement dependent on opposition support.

For now, Trump is defending Hegseth, not announcing his departure. But if he wants a new Pentagon chief confirmed under a Republican Senate, the window is closing.
