On November 2, 2026, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) announced Project SAGE, an initiative aimed at advancing the adoption of AI agents while establishing standards for governance and security.
Project SAGE focuses on three key areas:
Practical applications: Using AI to support payments, financial management, and operational processes.
Identity and permissions: Verifying AI agents and controlling their access through the Know Your Agent (KYA) approach.
Governance and interoperability: Enabling AI agents to interact and collaborate securely and transparently.
What does this mean for users?
In the future, AI could become a personal financial assistant, helping users make payments, manage spending, and handle tasks that currently require multiple manual steps.
What makes this initiative worth watching is that HKMA is not simply promoting innovation. It is also laying the groundwork for trust and accountability in Agentic Finance.
In my view, Project SAGE deserves attention because it connects AI with several foundations of future finance: identity, permissions security and interoperability.
Challenges around data protection, accountability, and human oversight remain. However, this direction could create significant opportunities for the financial sector.
AI is moving closer to taking action on behalf of people. It will be worth watching how far HKMA takes Project SAGE.
