My honest answer after today: I'm not keeping trading-size money on any single exchange anymore — not even Binance.
Yes, Binance says it will cover all losses, and reports say it has reserved $6.34B of company funds. About $3B of the estimated $6.3B has been frozen, and withdrawals are meant to resume within 48 hours. But the SAFU fund itself has historically held around $1B, so this cover only works because the company is putting its own balance sheet behind it — and until withdrawals actually reopen and the promised proof of reserves lands, my balance there is a claim, not coins I control.
The price action backed that up. $BTC fell to about $76,300, bounced to roughly $77,400, and $1.57B in leveraged positions were liquidated in 24 hours. Fear & Greed dropped from 51 to 30. That's not just a hack headline, that's trust repricing in real time.
The line that stuck with me came from Noelle Acheson: self-custody isn't safe, exchange custody isn't safe either. So the question isn't finding a risk-free option — it's choosing which risk you manage yourself.
My setup from here: a small balance on-exchange for trading, the rest in self-custody, and no new large deposit until the post-mortem is out.
Vote in the comments — and be honest about what you're actually doing, not what you think you should do:
A) Stay fully on Binance — the cover pledge is enough
B) Move most to self-custody, keep a small trading balance (my pick)
C) Split across several exchanges
D) Sit in stablecoins or fiat until proof of reserves and the post-mortem land
