🇰🇵 North Korea is behind the largest hack in the history of the crypto market (Reuters)
US-based analytics firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis have linked the attack on Binance to North Korean hackers with a high degree of confidence.
Key findings from the Reuters investigation:
➤ A 20-minute hack. The bulk of the funds were stolen in approximately 20 minutes. It is believed that the hackers gained access to Binance’s systems via a compromised laptop belonging to one of the engineers.
➤ $6.3 billion stolen. Binance, working with partners, managed to locate ~$3 billion of the stolen assets and took steps to freeze them. The fate of the remaining $3.3 billion is unknown.
➤ Investigation. Binance is collaborating with the FBI and the US Secret Service to investigate the breach.
➤ Market impact. Analysts warn that the hack could undermine trust in centralized cryptocurrency exchanges.
Binance has not yet officially identified those responsible for the attack.
