Coinbase Says Funds Are Safe — But Contact Data Leaked
Coinbase denies its systems were breached after an incident at Amplitude, an analytics vendor it uses, exposed contact data for a small subset of customers.
Coinbase said on October 28 that Amplitude experienced the incident, which also hit other Amplitude customers. It found no evidence of unauthorised access to Coinbase systems, said customer funds were not impacted, and is notifying customers and regulators.
Why it matters: leaked email addresses and phone numbers are prime material for phishing and impersonation scams, even when no funds are taken. SlowMist claimed details for more than 70,000 users were involved, but Coinbase has not confirmed that number or said which contact fields were exposed.
