Five-minute bets on $BTC: signal or noise?

Polymarket's 5-minute "Up or Down" crypto markets are trending on X after posts said they are now reaching its US app, covering $BTC, $ETH, $SOL and $XRP. The mechanics are simple: each window asks whether the price closes at or above where it opened five minutes earlier, and the winning side pays $1 per share. On the global site, the BTC market resolves against a Chainlink BTC/USD data stream.

Reactions split fast. Some call it a clean way to trade volatility; others call it gambling with a chart attached. My take: at a five-minute horizon, price is mostly noise, fees and spread matter more than your thesis, and the main edge goes to whoever reacts fastest. Calling direction a hundred times a day is closer to a coin flip than a strategy.

Where these markets could actually be useful is as a live sentiment gauge. When a 5-minute "Up" contract is priced far from 50/50 without real news, that tells you something about crowd positioning, not about where BTC will be next week.

Context: BTC is around $80.7K, up about 0.9% in 24 hours, holding the $79.5K–$80.8K range ahead of today's Fed decision. For me, the 4H structure matters far more than any five-minute candle.
