Billionaire venture capitalist Tim Draper (@TimDraper) has praised Bitcoin $BTC creator Satoshi Nakamoto, describing the pseudonymous founder as an optimist who took on the banking system with software. The comments came after Draper placed 76th on a Forbes ranking of America's greatest living optimists.

Draper links optimism to technological progress

Forbes ranked Tim Draper, 68, at number 76 on its list. The list was compiled in honor of the 250th birthday of the United States. It recognizes founders who took big risks on new possibilities, along with investors, philanthropists and educators.

Forbes notes that Draper has been a venture capitalist since 1985. His firm, Draper Associates, announced a new $300 million flagship fund in June aimed at early-stage founders.

Reacting to the ranking on X, Draper argued that optimists drive progress. He wrote that pessimists might be "right" for the time being, but that optimists are the ones who do everything that drives progress.

He named Hotmail co-founders Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith, and Skype founders Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, as examples. He also cited Elon Musk's work in electric vehicles and commercial space travel as demonstrations of optimism overcoming skepticism.

Draper said Satoshi was part of that group. He described Satoshi as an optimist who tried to change the global economy through Bitcoin and software, shifting trust from financial institutions into code.

Why Bitcoin was a break from banking

The framing matches Bitcoin's founding document. Nakamoto's paper proposed a purely peer-to-peer version of electronic cash. It would allow online payments to be sent directly from one party to another without going through a financial institution.

The paper arrived in 2008, when the world was reeling from a financial crisis and many people blamed global financial institutions for risky practices.

Draper has backed that view with his own money. In 2014, he acquired seized BTC at a US government auction.

Bitcoin remains a contested asset, but Draper's remarks show how prominent investors continue to cast its creation as a bet that few believed would work.
