SBI Holdings and Startale signed an MOU with BlackRock Financial Management and BlackRock Japan to explore connecting tokenized money market funds with JPYSC, SBI's yen-denominated stablecoin. The exploration covers three areas: technology and infrastructure, business models and distribution, and regulation and market development — and it's explicitly open to other Japanese and international firms joining.
Let's be honest about what this isn't: no product, no launch date, no timeline. It's an exploration agreement. But the pairing is what makes it worth noting. BlackRock's tokenized BUIDL fund holds around $2.17 billion in Treasurys, overnight repos and cash, while JPYSC — launched with Startale in June as Japan's first trust-bank-backed yen stablecoin — gives that world a non-dollar cash leg.
