One detail in Lilly’s upcoming earnings caught my attention: even its adjusted EPS could take a hit from a major acquisition-related charge.

In its October 7 update, Eli Lilly estimated around $4.2 billion in acquired in-process R&D charges for Q3, or roughly $4.57 per share. The interesting part? The company said the charge would affect both GAAP and non-GAAP earnings.

That’s easy to overlook when making an earnings prediction. We often assume adjusted EPS removes unusual expenses, so a big one-time charge shouldn’t matter much. But in this case, Lilly says it will still affect that number.

There’s another piece of context worth keeping in mind. In Q2, Lilly’s revenue grew 48% year over year to $23 billion. Yet both reported and adjusted EPS included $3.03 per share in acquired R&D charges.

So, looking only at revenue growth might miss part of the picture. And looking at EPS without understanding what’s included could be just as misleading.

For Binance Pick, I think the first step is checking exactly which earnings metric the prediction uses. Revenue, GAAP EPS and adjusted EPS can paint different pictures of the same quarter.

Lilly is scheduled to report Q3 results on October 29. What remains uncertain is whether the final acquisition-related charge will match the preliminary estimate.
