According to Jin10, the Financial Times reported that investors are rushing to buy credit default swaps (CDS) to protect their portfolios against a potential collapse in the AI boom. The instrument, which rose to prominence during the global financial crisis, is now seeing a sharp increase in trading as a wave of corporate borrowing to fund trillions of dollars in AI infrastructure spending boosts demand for the insurance-like derivatives, which pay out if a linked company defaults on its debt. Morgan Stanley Research data showed that average weekly trading in CDS linked to bonds issued by Oracle, SpaceX, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Broadcom, and Nvidia exceeded $9 billion in September, compared with less than $2 billion in July. Institutional data showed that U.S. corporate CDS index trading volume so far this year has exceeded the total for all of last year.
