🚨 You move into a stablecoin to protect your gains. What if that move also triggers a tax bill?

🇫🇷 France is moving toward that possibility.

THE MARKET FILE — POLICY WATCH
October 19, 2026

🏛️ WHAT HAPPENED?
On October 16, the National Assembly adopted amendment I-3898 to the 2027 budget bill.

It would end tax deferral when crypto is exchanged for e-money tokens under MiCA: stablecoins referencing one official currency.

Proposed start date: January 1, 2027.

⚠️ An adopted amendment is NOT a final law. It still has to survive the legislative process.

🔍 WHAT CHANGES?
Under France’s current rules for individuals covered by its crypto capital-gains regime, crypto-to-crypto swaps without a cash adjustment benefit from tax deferral.

Under this proposal, moving into a qualifying stablecoin could realize a taxable gain—even without withdrawing euros to your bank.

The issue is the gain, not an automatic tax on your entire balance.

📖 MY READ:
For many people, stablecoins are the waiting room: reduce exposure, breathe, decide later.

This proposal could change the after-tax cost of that pause.

A plan needs more than an entry and an exit price. It also needs to account for what happens between them.

👀 I’m watching whether this provision survives. This is a French proposal, not a worldwide rule.

Would this change how you take profits—or how much you set aside for taxes?
