Zcash NU7 Proposal Could Freeze Funds in Legacy Sprout Privacy Pool

Zcash is preparing for a major network upgrade that could make cryptocurrency held in its oldest privacy pool, known as Sprout, impossible to spend. The proposed change is part of the NU7 upgrade and is outlined in Zcash Improvement Proposal ZIP 2003.

The proposal would disable version 4 transactions, the only transaction format that supports spending funds from the legacy Sprout pool. If the change takes effect, users could retain their private keys but still lose the ability to move their remaining ZEC through the upgraded network.

Why the Proposal Matters

Sprout was Zcash’s original shielded transaction system, but it has largely been replaced by newer privacy pools, including Sapling and Orchard. Developers argue that removing support for the older transaction format would simplify network maintenance and reduce the technical burden of supporting outdated privacy technology.

Approximately 22,309 ZEC remained in the Sprout pool as of October 17, 2026, according to reported blockchain data. These funds would not be burned or removed from the recorded supply, but they could become inaccessible for spending if the proposed rules are activated.

NU7 Upgrade Timeline

The NU7 upgrade has already been activated on Zcash’s public testnet, allowing developers to assess its technical changes before a mainnet rollout. A decision on mainnet activation was planned for October 20, with November 5 remaining the target date, subject to approval and readiness. <Cite refs={["turn227862search0","turn227862search10","turn227862news16"]}/>

What ZEC Holders Should Know

Users who still hold funds in Sprout should review official Zcash guidance and investigate migration options before any mainnet activation. Recovering legacy funds may require specialized wallet software and a lengthy blockchain scan. Moving funds to newer shielded pools may also expose transaction amounts, creating a potential privacy trade-off.$GOOGLB $AMZNB
