I’m watching the market’s reaction to Friday’s sell-off, and one thing stands out: “A sharp spike in fear doesn’t always mean the panic will last.”

The VIX, Wall Street’s main fear gauge, surged 21.5% to 19.99 on Friday as the S&P 500 dropped 1.09%. AI-related concerns, rising geopolitical tensions, and oil market uncertainty all contributed to the risk-off sentiment.

But historical data tells an interesting story.

📉 “Friday Panic Doesn’t Always Carry Into Monday”

Looking at historical patterns, the VIX has jumped 20% or more on a Friday 32 times since 1990, excluding the latest move. In 25 of those cases, it declined the following Monday, with an average drop of around 4.5%.

Seasonality also leans toward easing volatility. The VIX has historically declined in November in 25 of the past 36 years.

Of course, “history offers a clue, not a guarantee.” In seven of those 32 cases, the VIX continued climbing on Monday.

₿ Bitcoin Is Giving Me Another Signal

Bitcoin has remained above $80,000, trading within its recent choppy range despite Friday’s market anxiety.

I see this as a potentially encouraging sign. Bitcoin trades around the clock, making its weekend price action useful to monitor while traditional stock markets are closed.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin’s implied volatility index, BVIV, slipped about 1% on Friday and remained relatively stable, suggesting traders weren’t dramatically increasing their expectations for Bitcoin price swings.

Still, Bitcoin’s resilience alone cannot confirm that stocks will recover.

⚠️ What I’m Watching Next

I’m keeping an eye on three things:

- VIX movement: Will volatility cool when traditional markets reopen?

- Bitcoin’s $80,000 level: Can BTC maintain its position if risk sentiment worsens?

- Macro headlines: Will AI-related concerns and geopolitical tensions push investors toward safer assets?

My takeaway: “Monday could bring a reset in market fear, but I’m not treating historical patterns as a trading signal on their own.”

If volatility continues rising, markets could face another round of selling pressure. If fear fades, we may see a calmer start to the week.

What do you think will Wall Street recover on Monday, or is more volatility ahead?
