Scammer loses $4.8 M in Bitcoin after Ledger implant theft
Chainalysis reports a task‑scam operator moved more than 60 Bitcoin (about $4.8 million) into three Ledger addresses on September 22, then thieves emptied each address in a single transfer on October 9 into a consolidation wallet flagged as stolen funds. The largest linked scam wallet sent $1.36 million across 106 transfers; each Ledger address was drained of roughly $1.64 million.
Ledger traced unauthorized hardware implants to signers sold by CryptoBilis. The implant captured the 24‑word recovery phrase via LTE eSIM and transmitted it. Specter estimates CryptoBilis‑related losses exceed $86 million across Bitcoin, Ethereum and TRON. Ledger advises any CryptoBilis hardware user to migrate to a new signer with a fresh recovery phrase.
