The line I kept circling in Nillion’s node guide wasn't the 70,000 NIL stake. It was the instruction to fund the operator wallet with ETH.
That separates staking rewards from running a profitable node. A share of 0.5% annual emissions looks neat on paper; gas, RPC bills, missed triggers and uptime don't fit neatly into a yield screenshot. And fees only matter if somebody keeps paying to use Covenants.
There is a market version of the same problem. Nillon can announce real technical progress while a thin order book still turns a large sale into ugly slippage. A green candle after a release means less if BTC and the rest of the market moved together.
I also wouldn't confuse rising open interest with rising demand. Positive funding may show crowded longs, negative funding crowded shorts; neither proves new spot buyers. In thin liquidity, a leveraged unwind can overwhelm the story quickly.
The comparison I care about is activity versus durable demand: completed paid triggers, fees retained by operators, and spot depth through volatile sessions.
If Nillon needs emissions to reward operators while derivatives supply most of the trading excitement, what's actually getting stronger?
