🚨 U.S. CPI UPDATE: Inflation heats up

September’s CPI report came in mixed—but leaned hotter than expected:

• Headline CPI: +0.6% MoM, in line with the +0.6% forecast; up from +0.4% in August
• Headline CPI: 3.7% YoY vs. 3.6% expected; up from 3.4%
• Core CPI: +0.3% MoM vs. 0.2% expected
• Core CPI: 2.6% YoY vs. 2.5% expected

The headline jump was driven largely by energy: gasoline prices rose 9.1%, accounting for more than half of the monthly increase. Core inflation also ran hotter than forecast, so this wasn’t only a headline-energy story.

Market impact: The hotter inflation data initially lifted the U.S. dollar as traders reassessed the Fed’s rate outlook. The dollar reached an 18-month high, then pulled back later—showing why the first move after a data release isn’t always the full story.

What traders may watch next: Fed rate expectations, Treasury yields, and whether inflation pressure continues beyond energy. A hot CPI report can support the USD, but the market response depends on expectations and follow-up data.

What matters more to you here: the energy-driven headline jump, or the hotter core reading?
