A crypto’s price tells you only part of the story.
How many tokens are in circulation? Who owns them? And how many could become available in the future?
To understand these questions, you need to know about Tokenomics.
🪙 What Is Tokenomics?
Tokenomics refers to the economic design of a cryptocurrency or token.
It covers several important elements, including supply, distribution, utility, and how new tokens enter circulation.
Understanding these elements can help you learn more about how a crypto project works.
📊 1. Token Supply
Not all tokens associated with a project are necessarily available on the market.
Three terms worth knowing:
Circulating Supply: Tokens currently available in the market.
Total Supply: Tokens that currently exist, excluding tokens that have been burned.
Max Supply: The maximum number of tokens that can ever exist, if the project has a defined limit.
These figures can differ significantly from one project to another.
👥 2. Token Distribution
Who holds the tokens?
Depending on the project, tokens may be allocated to the team, investors, the community, or a project treasury.
Distribution matters because it helps you understand how token ownership is structured.
It’s also worth checking whether large allocations are subject to vesting schedules.
🔓 3. Token Unlocks
Some tokens are locked and become available according to a predetermined schedule.
These releases are known as Token Unlocks.
When researching a project, check how many tokens are scheduled to unlock, when they will become available, and who will receive them.
An unlock may increase the supply available for trading, but it doesn’t automatically mean the price will rise or fall.
⚙️ 4. Token Utility
What is the token actually used for?
Depending on the project, a token may serve different purposes, such as paying network fees, participating in governance, or accessing specific services.
Understanding its utility helps you evaluate the role it plays within the project’s ecosystem.
💡 The Key Takeaway
A token’s price alone doesn’t tell you the whole story.
Before forming an opinion about a crypto project, look beyond the price and research its supply, distribution, unlock schedule, and utility.
Tokenomics won’t tell you exactly what a token’s price will do, but it can help you understand how the token is designed.
