Citigroup has slashed its 12-month Bitcoin price target to $82,000, down from $112,000, as ETF demand reverses and investor sentiment cools. The bank had already trimmed its outlook earlier in 2026, when the target was pulled down from $143,000. The new forecast puts $BTC far below its current trading level.
The biggest change is how Citi views Bitcoin ETFs. It had expected $10 billion in net inflows over the coming year. It now expects zero. BTC ETFs have shed roughly $3.3 billion in 2026, and June alone saw $4 billion leave—the worst month on record for those products.
Analysts tied the downgrade to softer investor demand, negative ETF flows, and delayed U.S. crypto legislation. They also flagged digital asset treasury companies, which have loaded up on Bitcoin, as a potential source of selling pressure. Money rotating toward AI-themed assets adds to the defensive setup.
Citi’s bear case is more severe. If a recession hits and ETF withdrawals continue, the bank sees Bitcoin at $53,000 over the next 12 months.
As of July 1, 2026, Bitcoin trades at $60,041, up $1,698 or 2.91% on the day. It swung between $57,717.55 and $60,473.99 in the past 24 hours, with the biggest move after 9:00 a.m. Volume reached 446,377 BTC, or $26.85 billion, and market cap sits at $1.20 trillion.
The revision contrasts with Citi’s April view, when it argued adding Bitcoin alongside gold could improve portfolio performance by splitting a traditional 5% gold allocation. That report said BTC was increasingly behaving as a geopolitical hedge and neutral settlement asset, citing strong momentum and bearish derivatives positioning.
