A critical vulnerability sat hidden in the $XRP Ledger for 11 years. Had it been exploited, an attacker could have created spendable XRP without paying for it, directly threatening XRP’s 100 billion supply cap.
The good news: the bug was patched before public disclosure, and there is no evidence it was exploited on public networks.
🔍 What Happened
The flaw: An integer overflow in XRPL’s payment engine. When a single payment consumed hundreds of specially crafted offers, large sums could be miscalculated.
The potential exploit: An attacker could spread the newly created XRP across multiple accounts, allowing it to be spent just like ordinary XRP.
The discovery: A researcher reported the issue through XRPL’s bug bounty program on September 22, 2026.
The fix: The patch shipped in xrpld 3.4.1 on September 25, well before technical details were made public on October 9.
The verification: RippleX reproduced the exploit in testing and confirmed the created XRP could be spent. Even so, it found no evidence of exploitation on public networks.
⚠️ Why This Matters
The 100 billion supply cap is a cornerstone of XRP’s economic design. A flaw capable of creating extra tokens could have shaken confidence in the entire ledger had it been exploited.
It’s also a reminder that even a blockchain with years of operation can harbor deeply hidden software flaws.
📌 What Should XRP Holders Do?
✅ Node operators: Make sure your node runs xrpld 3.4.1 or later.
✅ Wallet and exchange holders: There is no evidence this bug led to a public-network exploit, and no emergency transfer of funds is required.
✅ Everyone: Keep following official XRPL security updates and protocol improvements.
📈 My Take
This was a serious vulnerability, but the response matters just as much. A researcher found the flaw, developers reproduced it, a fix was shipped, and disclosure came only after the network was protected. That is responsible disclosure done right.
Security isn’t about claiming a blockchain has zero bugs. It’s about finding vulnerabilities, fixing them responsibly, and strengthening safeguards against the next one.
