OTC bitcoin reserves just hit a multi-year low on CryptoQuant's tracker.

Exchange desk holdings have fallen steadily since peaking near 500,000–550,000 BTC back in 2021, dropping to the low 120,000s today, a decline of roughly 400,000 coins since 2022. Current readings cluster between 123,000 and 150,000 depending on which snapshot you check. This was the inventory whales relied on to buy size without moving the public order book.

But thinning desks don't mean the coins disappeared. They migrated, into ETF wrappers, corporate treasuries, and cold storage. Strategy alone now sits on 846,000 BTC, and IBIT has been quietly absorbing supply for months. Nothing evaporated; it just relocated.

Here's the nuance: OTC balance measures inventory, not buying pressure. A depleted desk simply means the next whale-sized order is more likely to land directly on Coinbase or Binance instead of going through a private counter. That alone doesn't guarantee $87K, and right now, the Coinbase premium is still negative, meaning US spot demand hasn't stepped up yet.

The signal to track: does this balance keep shrinking while price holds above $84K? That combo, tight inventory plus steady demand, is bullish. But if balances start climbing again while price goes nowhere, that's desks rebuilding stock into a soft market, not a supply squeeze.
