🚨 CFTC ISSUES GUIDANCE ON “MENTION MARKETS”
The U.S. CFTC has issued guidance warning that prediction markets tied to personal statements, appearances, and interactions should be presumed vulnerable to manipulation.
Exchanges are being urged to assess:
• Outside pressure on the person involved
• Independent constraints
• Verification and public oversight
• Trading rules and monitoring
⚠️ The guidance is not a binding rule and does not ban exchanges from listing these markets.
Galaxy Research says a bigger issue remains: individuals could intentionally trigger market outcomes without holding a financial position.
The First Amendment may also limit how far regulators can go in restricting personal speech.
A new regulatory line is being drawn around prediction markets. 👀
